Celebrating Mares - Roamy

20160411_115205Chelsea Roper tells us about her mare, Roamy, who is a 6 year old 15hh cob.

“She came to our livery yard as a field livery living in the field next to my gelding.  On first meeting her I thought she was stunning and a real sweetheart and would often take her a carrot when bringing my gelding in from the field. Long story short, after a few months of being in the field, she came up for sale. I remember having a conversation with the yard manager, asking a bit about her and that I really liked her, and her words were ‘do you want her?’. After a few moments thought and a picture message of her to my mum it was a done deal! Me and my mum put our money together totalling a mere £300 (an absolute bargain!) and she was ours. She was unbroken but had been in long reins, so an exciting blank canvas!

We have now owned her for 4 months and she is turning into a super IMG_20160411_202620little horse! The best impulsive decision ever!

Complete pro out hacking, schooling is really coming along and pops the small XC fences we have at the yard, so excited for the future! She is an absolute poppet, I have a feeling she will turn her hoof to anything! My mum is a bit of a nervous rider and together they are slowly building confidence.

We are doing our first intro dressage test next week and then hoping to have a summer of showing and fun rides.”

DSCF4597What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking of owning a mare/bought a new mare?

“Advice I’d give to new mare owners is to bare in mind the differences between mares and geldings temperaments. Before Roamy I have only had geldings and it never really occurred to me that owning a mare would be that different. Obviously seasons don’t make things easy, and Roamy can become a bit daft and stroppy so don’t take it personally, it’s just the hormones! Work through it, build a bond and gain a mutual respect;  when it all clicks into place it’s very rewarding!”
