Celebrating Mares - Sophie
Joanne Wyles shares her story about her mare, Sophie.
“My mare is Sophie, I have loaned her for just of 3 years.
She is a 22 year old ex broodmare and has had 4 foals. When I first had her I had lost all my confidence and she hadn’t been ridden for a few years, we got of to a rocky start but persevered!
Eventually we got the hang of each other and started to go to some shows. Before her foals Sophie was a showjumper and had not done any schooling on the flat, going over a jump was the most terrifying thought to me so we started with showing classes and walk trot dressage. It turned out the judges liked her so we won lots of rosettes! I got braver and started doing a few jumps and then we got roped in to doing quadrille. This was great fun and we dressed up as the Pirates of the Caribbean (Sophie was a Chinese ship) and we were one mark away from qualifying for Olympia!
This year I set my target to do the BRC combined training area qualifier in April. We did jump training every week from Feb – May, it all went very well, but we got eliminated because I missed a fence – oops!
Anyway we have had a good season and went to the Veteran Horse Society championships and got placed in every class, our challenge for next year is the Wobbleberries challenge to do an 80cm one day event!”
What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking of owning a mare/bought a new mare?
“My advice would be to give them plenty of time to settle in and get used to you, spend time together and don’t try to rush things!”
