Celebrating Mares - Vienna
Louise King shares her story about her mare, ‘Vienna’.
“I have owned Vienna since she was one. Before I got her she had not been handled and therefore she was very difficult in every way. She hated me, humans, everyone really. She just wanted to be wild.
I tried so many times to bond with her, usually ending with me being kicked, bitten or charged at. I sat so many times crying my eyes out thinking, what have I done? This mare is wild. However, I kept trying and trying with the help of a good trainer and eventually we started to bond.
Once broken in, Vienna was and still is at times very quirky; bucking, bronking and flying with those back legs in the air.
We go to show jumping and cross country competitions together and although outside the ring Vienna can be very challenging, once in the arena she jumps her heart out! She loves jumping and she takes me round the course at a fast speed resulting in us winning many classes together.
At Christmas Vienna became suddenly ill with a heart infection and we nearly lost her. Slowly she started coming right again and we are back together jumping at speed, winning many classes.
I love my mare who is now 8 years old and hope she will be with me forever.”
What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking of owning a mare/bought a new mare?
“The advice I would give to anyone wanting a mare, or that has a mare is keep at it no matter how difficult / quirky they become because they will be your friend for life”
