Veterinary Conditions

You will be able to feel and possibly see tiny scabs that will feel like small lumps of dried mud but when removed are red and sore underneath. The horse’s leg may feel warm and look swollen.

The symptoms are quite distinctive. Your horse may be a headshaker if it exhibits any of the following

  • A sudden twitching of the head as if stung by a bee on the nose
  • Hiding its muzzle by over bending, in corners, in water, in other horse’s tails and in shrubbery
  • Rubbing its nose on its forelegs on objects or along the ground
  • Striking out with its forelegs
  • Snorting and sneezing more than normal
  • Flipping or waggling the nose/top lip or clamping the nostrils closed.

If you are at all unsure please contact your vet for advice.

No, not as such. The bacteria needs to enter the epidermis which is the uppermost protective layer of skin. Small cuts and abrasions caused by grit or use of rough brushes can allow the bacteria to enter and from there spread.

You should always avoid using the same brushes, rugs or turnout boots between horses (without a thorough clean first) but with a bacterial infection this is even more critical. To do so is increasing the level of risk of the bacteria entering the epidermis.

Field Relief Fly Masks and Fly Rug filter out the 70/80% of UV rays and therefore can reduce the amount sunlight reaching the horse. Using a Field Relief fly mask, sun sensitive horses can be turned out from evening through to the following morning but in severe cases turnout may have to be limited to night time only.

The Field Relief Max and Midi fly masks are designed to give maximum clearance to horses eyes and eyelashes, they both provide over 70% UV protection. The Net Relief Riding mask attaches to the bridle and provides over 65% UV protection while riding.

Our Field Relief Max Full Fly Mask protects from sunburn by blocking out at least 70% of harmful UV rays. Or if you prefer, the Field Relief Muzzle Protector can be fitted to a field safe headcollar such as Stellar Headcollar and it protects the horse’s nose from at least 70% of the suns rays.

If your horse has got sun burn then our Equilibrium Skin Soother is a natural cooling gel perfect to soothe sore areas.
