Horse diaries April - Stu
Keeping you up to date, behind the scenes with Equilibrium’s horses.
We care passionately about horses because we are owners and riders ourselves. Our horses are a big part of our daily lives and we would like to share with you, some of the trials and tribulations we face on a weekly basis with our horses – the good, bad & the ugly!
Stu: Parklands Steward – 16.2hh, 7 year old, Hanoverian Gelding
With early afternoon start times, Stu and his travelling buddy, Indie, were loaded and raring to go with plenty of time to spare.
I always like to allow myself extra time when competing, because there’s always something that can go wrong, travelling could take longer than expected… or you could forget a vital piece of equipment at home. Take me for example – I forgot my girth (not the first time either!).
Luckily my parents came to the rescue and managed to bring my girth over – essentially saving the day, otherwise I might as well have closed the lorry up and gone home again. Morale of the story – write a list of everything you need and tick it off!
We still managed to have a good 30 minutes warm-up for the first class, probably more than what we needed but at least we had the extra time if needed. Almost from the word go, Stu felt much more relaxed than he usually when is out and about. So instead of warming up the entire time, he had a walk break to relax so that we both went into the first test in a ‘cool’ frame of mind.
With a minor lapse in concentration, we made a small error, but the rest of the test felt great. With how he was going I thought the second test could only get better – which it did.
Ending the day with decent scores of 66% and 71% was great, and achieving a 1st and 2nd was the icing on top of the cake. I think its safe to say that it was a good day out, despite a few minor hiccups!
Onto the next one!
