The Equilibrium Therapy Horse Massage Mitt is designed to offer effective, affordable and easy to use massage therapy for all horses and ponies. Portable, battery operated horse massage.
The Massage Mitt has three different settings – high, medium and low – which can be selected easily from the mitt itself. This enables you to select the intensity of the program to suit your horse. Each program has three different types of massage – pulsing, vibration and stroking –to ensure all muscles are worked in different ways. Each session will last for 10 minutes ensuring you have enough time for full coverage over the horses muscle groups.
The Massage Mitt can be easily incorporated into your warming up and cooling down routine. The medium setting can be used to help warm muscles up prior to exercise. The low setting can then be used to cool down the muscles. It comes in a handy carry bag which makes it ideal for use at home, away or in the lorry it is easy to store in the tack room and is wipe clean. The bag also has useful storage spots for the battery and charger.
The massage mitt is the choice of many Olympians, World Champions, top producers, up and coming stars and amateurs. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with the massage pad and magnetic back pad and chaps.
Massage helps improve flexibility and reduce stiffness by improving blood supply to the muscles, this was found in our Massage Pad clinical trials which had massage applied to their backs via the pad and horses that used the pad showed a significant improvement in back flexibility. The heart rate is also reduced throughout the massage which promotes relaxation.
Tension is often one of the most common reasons for poor performance and by increasing relaxation and improving back flexibility; the negative effects of tension can be reduced. Relaxed muscles can help assist flexibility and movement in particular for competition horses performing dressage movements and jumping technical fences.

How to use
The Equilibrium Massage Mitt can be used in a variety of ways to help your horse.
General Massage/Warm Up
You can use the mitt as a general full body warm up for the horse or use it to target discipline specific muscle groups.
As an all over massage:
Use the massage mitt in a slow sweeping motion over all muscle groups shown below running in the same direction as the hair. Spend 2 minutes on each muscle group, making sure that you repeat this on both sides of the horse.
On the neck
On the shoulder
On the back
On the hindquarters
Discipline specific warm up:
Different disciplines put demand on different muscle groups depending on what is required of the horse. Spend longer on the areas that are specific to what you are about to do, this can prep the muscles for work and reduces the risk of strains. It can also help to increase flexibility and therefore range of movement. Suggested 4 minutes per targeted muscle group, again being sure to do the same on both sides of the horse.
Gluteal muscle group, biceps femoris, triceps. Back also important.
Cross Country
Hamstring group, biceps fem, semiten, semimemb
Endurance
Hamstrings, back

As for dressage
Targeted Areas
If you have had a musculoskeletal therapist (ie. Physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist etc) treat your horse they may well have identified areas where your horse is tight or over compensating. They may refer to these specific areas as trigger points or knots. These areas of muscle tension, if left untreated, can gradually worsen over time and then become more and more difficult to resolve. One reason for this is that as the muscle tightens the nutrient and oxygen supply to the muscle is restricted and the muscle fibres start to stick, or adhere, together. The body will then naturally guard the area so as to not trigger any pain signals. Without stretching or massage these are unlikely to self resolve.
Knots can be caused by:
– Overuse of a muscle – this could be due to compensation where a muscle is overworking to protect a painful joint, this is common in the hamstring muscle group where a horse is suffering from DJD in the hocks. Alternatively it could be training related if a horse has been asked to work in a way that they are not yet strong enough to work in and for too long, or from a repetitive action such as eating from a hay net.
– Muscle strain – This could be a slip in the field or a tweak in the school if a horse is perhaps not warmed up properly. This is quite common in spooky horses that suddenly fly sideways.
– Restricted movement – The mammalian body is not designed to stay in one position for too long, muscles have elastic properties that need to stretch and move to stay healthy. Box rest or long distance travelling can therefore often be the root cause of muscle knots.
Using the mitt for trigger points/knots
Use the mitt in a stroking motion over the general area for 1-2 minutes on a medium setting to warm up the area.
Next hold the mitt on the knot/trigger point for at least 5 minutes (on medium, or high if required). If your horse is comfortable, start to apply some pressure through the mitt during this time. This can help to increase the depth of the massage. Some horses will lean into the mitt which is a sure sign that you’ve hit the spot!
Then use a stroking motion again for a further 1-2minutes (on medium or low) to help drain away any toxins that have been released into the blood from the massage. Make sure plenty of fresh water is available as a good massage can make a horse thirsty. Also try feeding SimplyBoost Recovery with Vitamin E to support muscle recovery.
Apply this method to each point that needs treatment. This is a really good method to use to warm up a targeted area prior to any prescribed stretches.
It is not uncommon to need to repeat this on both sides of the horse in the same area depending on the cause of the muscle tension.
Safety Instructions & FAQ
I’ve read the massage from a Massage Pad or Massage Mitt isn’t deep enough to affect the horse, is this true?
This is a comment we occasionally see on social media where individuals have misunderstood the purpose of our massage products. The Massage Pad and Massage Mitt were developed to provide a superficial (surface) massage to enhance the horses’ well being. This was proven in our tests by showing a decrease in heart rate and an increase in back flexibility. The Massage Pad was not developed to replace the manual techniques of a qualified physiotherapist or massage therapist. Only a trained professional should carry out a massage to your horse that is able to reach the deeper muscles.

Horse & Hound forum reviews
Recommendations from Horse & Hound, horse owner forum….
“I have the mitt and my pony loves it, he will push himself into it when I use it on him and I can see from his face that he is relaxed. He particularly likes being massaged on his bottom and hind quarters.”
“I’ve got both. I got the pad and my pony absolutely loved it so I went mad and bought the mitt as well. It’s wonderful for doing his neck and hamstrings and as a bonus my dog loves it as well. I might even try it on my own aching muscles if I ever get the time.”
“you can really get into hamstrings and the like and also use it on yourself. I think they are a fabulous invention and a good price!”
“Got the pad and the mitt – best things I ever bought for my horses!”
“I love all the Equilibrium stuff, I have the pad, the mitt plus the magnetic pad, quarter pad and the magnetic leg wraps. I use them all the time I think they are brill.”
“I have the Equilibrium Massage Pad, and the Mitt. I find both are really good. I used to use them on my old racehorse, Bob, who would fall asleep with it on. He really loved it, and did him a power of good, as being an ex-racehorse he had a few problems with back and legs. And as he got older, it really helped in keeping him supple. I now use it on my other horse, Murphy, who also enjoys a good session with them. They vibrate, sometimes low and sometimes high. The pad runs for a 30 minute session, with variable settings, and the mitt runs for 10 minutes in a session, though obviously you can extend these times, or shorten them, whichever suits at the time. The battery life is pretty good too. I’m very pleased with mine. One of the best things I ever bought for my horses. Great for warming up, and for relaxing after, I found”.

I wanted to let you know how impressed I am with your Massage Mitt! I bought this mitt a couple of weekends ago as unfortunately me and my horse had an accident out hunting and he has been a bit sore on his shoulders and hind quarters. So I bought your massage mitt in the hope it would help penetrate the muscles deeper than I could from just massaging the areas and I am so impressed with your mitt! Just a 10 minute session on his hind quarters and his muscle was warm, lose and he felt very good straight away when I got on board. He absolutely loves the mitt he falls asleep every time I use it on him!
Thank you so much for the fab product it was a fab investment and I love professional bag that comes with it so easy to store safely and I will definitely be saving up to get your back pad!

This is an amazing, versatile piece of kit that is quickly becoming part of the horses’ daily routine.
I have noticed a huge difference in their work since beginning to use the massage mitt, with both horses feeling much looser and more relaxed in their work. I also own an Equilibrium Massage Pad which I love, but I think the massage mitt is great because you can target specific area that may be carrying tightness or just go for an all-round massage which both horses love! It has particularly helped my 7 year old Connemara who was quite tight in her poll, but after a month of regular massages targeting this spot, I have noticed a huge improvement in her work. Now she is loose and supple, she is coming on masses and will be very exciting for the future!
My massage mitt is also an essential part of kit to take to events. I always use both the massage mitt and the massage pad before the dressage and I find it helps to relax my highly-strung eventer and prepare him for the dressage. Last weekend we travelled 2 and a half hours to an event, however after an all over massage, he came off the horsebox loose, relaxed and supple to perform a personal best dressage of 29.8! He felt amazing which was great after so much travelling!
The massage mitt is easy to use with a simple control panel and runs on 10 minute cycles. This is a perfect amount of time as it means it is convenient for you to fit in, yet the horses still get a suitable length massage. It cleans easily, with just a wipe of a damp cloth, and is easy to hold and use meaning you don’t get arm ache! It also comes in a sturdy bag which is great for transporting it safely. The only con would be it’s hard to tell how long you have been using it for as to when to move on to the next set of muscles.
Lastly (and most importantly!), the horses love it! It is a great way to spoil them and help keep them in the best shape possible, whilst spending some time pampering and bonding with them. It is a very well made product, great value for money and definitely worth investing in!

My horse loves it. Even if he is too tight/sore to cope with me massaging by hand, as soon as you put the massage mitt on him, he relaxes and enjoys it. Definitely worth the investment and versatile to use all over the body too.
