Magnetic Therapy FAQ:
What is the difference between the Magnetic Back Pad and the Massage Pad?
The Magnetic Back and Quarters Pad is a quilted pad with four powerful, static Vitaflex® magnetic strips which can be attached anywhere to the inside of the pad, depending on the area to be treated. The Magnetic Back Pad is used to help treat a range of back problems by increasing the rate of healing when treating inflammation, swelling, stiffness, muscle tightness or tension and the symptoms of arthritis.
The Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad is a battery-operated back pad which delivers a 30 minute massage to the horse. It can be used, using the three different intensity settings, to either warm the horse’s muscles up before work, warm down the muscles after work or deliver an intensive therapeutic massage treatment at any time. The Massage Pad is clinically proven to promote relaxation help and improve back flexibility and suppleness.
Combined use of the Equilibrium Therapy Magnetic Back and Quarters Pad overnight and the Massage Pad once a day can help to maintain a healthy back
When should I use the Magnetic Back Pad?
Magnetic therapy works over a period of time so it is best worn overnight or during the day in the stable. The Magnetic Therapy Back and Quarters Pad is suitable for horses or ponies that;
- Suffer with a cold back
- Stiff veteran horses or horses standing in for long periods of time
- Are in high levels of work to encourage repair
- Help relieve stiffness in the pelvic limb
- Suffer with a sore back from ill-fitting saddle
- All horses during cold weather to prevent stiffness
- Pre and post op for Kissing Spine
- Horses with chronic back conditions
- That are prone to tying-up
How do the magnets work?
A magnet has two poles, North and South. Opposite poles attract and conversely like poles repel. When a magnet is placed on the body, the magnetic properties in the body’s cells will either attract those that are opposite or repel those that are alike. In this way the activity of the cells is increased which in turn increases the rate at which the cells regenerate and repair.
Why does Equilibrium use Vitaflex® magnets?
Vitaflex® magnets present two alternating poles to the body, negative and positive, making them different to normal Neodymium magnets, which present only one pole. These strong, circular and permanent magnetic fields of alternating poles sequences penetrate deep into the body tissue keeping the cells in an active regenerating state.
Can I start using the products on my horse straight away?
Yes. Your horse is unlikely to have any adverse reactions to wearing magnets however, a very small minority can experience leg swelling. As with all new products you may like to try the products on your horse for a short time initially.
When should I not use magnetic products on my horse?
Do not apply Vitaflex® magnets on open wounds, bruises, areas of inflammation or for the first 5 days following steroid injections. Reason: Magnetic fields dilate blood vessels and, hence, increase the flow of blood
It is not advisable to use magnets on a horse with a heart murmur or in the first trimester of pregnancy for you or your horse! Note: People with heart pacemakers should not carry magnetic products.
What are the benefits of the Magnetic chaps?
The Magnetic Chaps can be worn on your horse in the stable to help reduce signs of splints and windgalls and the symptoms of arthritis. They are ideal for horses on box rest to increase blood flow in the leg and prevent swelling.
How long will the magnets last?
The magnets will not become less efficient over time. The magnetic properties in the Vitaflex® magnets will not diminish over time.
Can I wash the magnets?
The magnets themselves CANNOT be washed. The Magnetic Chaps and Magnetic Back Pad can be washed on a cool wash with a non-biological detergent. The magnets should be removed from the protective pockets prior to washing to avoid accidental damage to the washing machine.
How should the products be stored when not in use?
Avoid storing the magnets in a very cold place, ie: a tack room during winter as the magnets may lose their flexibility.
Can the Magnetic Chaps be worn for turnout?
The Magnetic Chaps should only be worn in the stable and not worn for turnout as the Chaps are not designed for outdoor use. Magnetic therapy works best when the horse is at rest as this is nature’s optimum time to repair and regenerate.
Can I use Magnetic Chaps when my horse has mud fever?
We advise waiting until your horses’ mud fever has cleared up before using Magnetic Chaps. This is because magnetic therapy should not be used on open wounds or if there is any risk of infection.
Can my horse wear the Magnetic Back Pad to travel in?
The Magnetic Back Pad can be used when travelling providing the back pad is well fitted and the adjustable straps are securely fastened.
Can I put the magnetic stable chaps on wet legs?
For comfort reasons, we would recommend towel drying horses’ legs thoroughly before putting the Magnetic Chaps on.
Should I use the Magnetic Back pad on my horse before I ride and for how long?
The benefits of the magnets are best seen following regular use of the Magnetic Back Pad, ie: overnight in the stable for noticeable results. Instead, we would recommend using the Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad on your horse to warm up his muscles before riding
Why does my horse get hot when wearing the magnetic back pad?
The Vitaflex® magnets used in the Equilibrium Therapy Magnetic range have a heat insulating structure in the form of an extremely thin gold or platinum coloured aluminium reflector. This results in a slight local warming where the magnet touches the skin and dilation of the blood vessels, thereby improving circulation which accelerates the influx of nutrient and the removal of toxins.
Can my horse wear a stable rug over his back pad?
Yes a stable rug can be worn over the Magnetic Back Pad however, be aware that your horse may be warmer than usual when wearing the Magnetic Back Pad so may require a lighter rug or fewer layers than usual.
Can the magnetic back pad be worn underneath a turnout rug in the field?
The Magnetic Back Pad is designed to be worn in the stable. We do not recommend that the Magnetic Back Pad is worn during turnout.
How tight should I have the straps on the back pad?
The straps on the Magnetic Back Pad are easily adjusted to fit most horses. The straps should tightened to fit around your horse snugly – not as tight as a girth but tighter than a rug.
Can I purchase replacement magnets?
Yes, replacement magnets can be purchased for both the Magnetic Back Pad and the Magnetic Chaps.
