Turnout Boots for Mud Fever Prevention
With mud fever, prevention is better than cure. Equi-Chaps Close Contact Chaps, do exactly what they say – they fit close, like a second skin to help keep legs protected and reduce the damaging effect mud can have on the skin.
Unlike other turnout boots, Equi-Chaps Close Contact Chaps completely encase the lower leg, covering the hoof, heel and fetlock area.
Equi-Chaps Close Contact Chaps offer mild protection from brushing and overreach injuries so eliminate the need for a brushing boot and an overreach boot when turning out.
They are very easy to clean and dry quickly and the touch and close straps make them secure even around the fetlock area. With handy grip tabs for easy removal.
They come in an array of sizes to suit the smallest of ponies and largest of horses with additional features like the hook receptive fetlock area to allow for greater adjustability.
Please note however, they are not suitable for horses or ponies with a neoprene allergy.
It is important that the close contact chaps fit the horse snugly so that mud doesn’t rise under the boots and cause irritation which could lead to mud fever. Because of this, we have found that many horses need a smaller size in the Close Contact Chaps than they would normally wear. Not too sure of the size you need? Get in touch and we will be happy to help.
They can be worn for up to 12 hours with minimum risk of rubbing as they are so flexible, soft and breathable.

Having previously used equilibrium field chaps/boots before (must be an old model) I was keen to try out the new ones designed to protect against mud fever! I can leave the chaps on all day as they are breathable and after a day in the field (with deep mud in places) her legs remain dry and free of mud. The tops of the hooves may get slightly wet, but the bulbs where my horse tends to feel the pains of mud fever are left clean. If the chaps aren’t secured properly there is the risk mud might get beneath the chap and sit in places you don’t want it to. They are also very easy to rinse off with a hose after and will dry over night on the radiator. They tend to take longer to dry out if I were to leave them at the yard so would recommend purchasing two sets so you can swap over whilst one set dries out. Overall very happy with the chaps and would recommend to those who suffer with mud fever!

After being initially disappointed with these boots I can definitely say that equilibrium went to lengths to help and they showed how important feedback is to them I have lots of equilibrium products and I love them all, these boots are no different after my initial concerns I have had no further problems and my horse comes in with lovely white kegs although the rest of him is covered lol 👍

Our horse has suffered quite badly with mud fever particularly last year. We had tried mud fever boots on him before which were expensive and kept bagging up at the bottom of his leg and didn’t really do the job.
These boots however are a really nice fit, they don’t bag up or slip down like the others I have tried. Would definitely recommend.

I have a horse that is prone to mud fever and he is grey. For me the boots have provided two huge positives; they keep his lower leg clean and not a sign of mud fever to date! They are a good snug fit and keep his legs dry and clean but they don’t overheat the leg and have never slipped! An added bonus is that the boots are soft and thick so offers a good protection of his legs. However the boots still allow him to move freely in the field whilst grazing/playing with others. When the boots need a wash down, the material dries quickly which is great as you do not need loads of pairs to get you through the week.

Really disappointed purchased 28/12/20 collected from store and straight on horse 29/12/20 by the time I fetched in big hole in them 😩 had a black pair previously these were a replacement as they had worn out clearly not as robust as my last pair which had kept him mud free for years

Been using my CC chaps for around a year now and absolutely love them! They have kept the mud off of my greys white legs and kept him mud fever free, love them and recommend them to anyone!

I am extremely disappointed in these, I have only had them one month and they have started to rip at the bottom and they have also frayed.

I had the original blue ones which were great. The lower Velcro’s no longer stick so they just fall down now. They are also a bit of an odd shape/fit. Very disappointed.
Michelle –
Very disappointing. Don’t fit properly. Measured legs properly and rang to check best size to order but they still fall down or let mud in. Now put smaller front boots on hind legs but legs still come in muddy at the bottom. Now stopped using them as waste of time

The Velcro does not work nearly as well ( at the bottom of the boot) as it did on the old close contact chaps. Now had two boots ruined in only a few weeks. Have used close contact chaps for 7 years successfully, so disappointed in the new style.
