Description
A stylish, comfortable safety head collar with a patent pending safety system, which releases when needed to prevent injury to the soft tissue and nerves on the face, poll and neck.
Tested in the laboratory for a consistent release point, and practical field trials for everyday use. Match it with our Stellar Lead Rope.
The Stellar® Safety Head Collar Story
For over 10 years, the Field Relief Muzzle Protector has been an essential part of our UV and Fly Protection range. We have always recommended that horse owners use the Muzzle Protector with a field-safe head collar. So we decided to look at head collars, and really question how we knew they were safe. For a piece of equipment we normally use every day, whether it’s in the field, to lead and tie up or to travel with, shouldn’t they all be ‘safe’?
So we decided to create our own safety head collar, one that could have everything you’d want in a first-class head collar, but it’s been scientifically tested too!
Introducing Stellar®
- Tested in laboratory & field trials
- Release system
- Adjustable for a great fit
- Durable and weatherproof
- Long-lasting stainless steel fittings
- Comfortable padding at nose and poll
- Smart leather-look synthetic material with low maintenance
Patented Release System
As a piece of everyday equipment, we should be able to trust our horses’ head collars to be fit for purpose, but also to release in the situation of a serious incident.
Stellar® has a specially designed headpiece with adjustable press-stud fasteners and keepers on both sides of the head collar. The headpiece releases when needed to prevent injury to the soft tissue and nerves on the face, poll and neck. By moving the keeper, the force it takes for the head collar to release changes. In laboratory conditions, in position A, the head collar consistently released on average between 50-60kg. For position B, it was between 80-90kg. Ideally, position A should be used as much as possible, however if there is a situation where you need it to release at a higher force, move the keeper to position B.
This patent pending Safety Release System has been scientifically tested to provide measurable and consistent results. Thorough testing in both laboratory conditions, as well as everyday practical situations, provides the necessary balance between safe handling and horse safety.
UK Patent Application No. 2000234.1
Materials
Stellar® is made from PVC which gives it its durable and weatherproof qualities. Neoprene padding on the headpiece and nosepiece aid comfort, especially if worn for long periods of time – please note: it is not suitable for horses with a neoprene allergy. The durable stainless-steel fittings are suitable to be out in all weathers.
Testing
Before we began questioning whether we should make a head collar, we approached Dr David Marlin to find out if there was any information already out there on head collars. After searching, he couldn’t find anything in scientific literature – which considering a head collar is used by many horse owners on a daily basis, is quite surprising.
Survey
Dr David Marlin started some research by conducting a large survey of 5615 horse owners/handlers to find out their experience with using head collars, how often they use them and the problems they have had associated with them.
Again, the results were surprising.
31% experienced a horse being injured as a result of a head collar.
15% of people had injured in a head collar related incident.
There were 167 horse fatalities as a result of a head collar.
Looking closer into the 30% of injured horses, it didn’t seem to matter if they used a standard head collar, safety head collar or a safety device, however baler twine was associated with a higher risk of injury.

These results demonstrated that perhaps, head collars should be investigated in more depth…
Laboratory Testing
There are a lot of different head collar designs, materials and safety systems. However none of them appear to have been studied in any kind of systematic way.
For the next stage of testing, Dr David Marlin constructed a testing rig, to measure at what load the different head collars broke or released at.
Firstly, typical head collars were identified – webbing, synthetic, rope, leather, safety.
Each head collar was tested in a standardised way which was repeatable. They were tested 6 times. For head collars which broke, there was a new one tested each time. For safety head collars that released, they were re-used if possible.
The results showed that some broke incredibly easily, while others were so strong that they could suspend more than an average horses weight without breaking.
Based on this research, it appears that there is a need for standardisation or an appropriate load for head collars to release at, especially if they are a safety head collar.
Field Testing
When handling horses, we can’t afford for a head collar to release at too low a weight (for example, 10kg), because it’s not practical to use. However if the head collar doesn’t open at all or at a high load, it increases the risk of injury and, as we’ve seen from the survey results, the injury could even be fatal.
Stellar™ has been independently field tested by Writtle University College on their yard by a variety of people and horses for all general horse handling.

Use and Care
Care:
While the Stellar Head Collar may have a ‘leather-look’, it does not need the same care as leather head collars.
To clean it, simply wipe down with a soft cloth or sponge and warm water.
Do not use soaps, detergents or oils as this can damage the weatherproof material.
Take care to keep the stud fasteners clean and dirt free. In the event of a release incident, check the stud fasteners for damage. If you’re unsure or in the rare event of damage, please get in touch.

Figure 1
Use:
The size of each Stellar™ Head Collar is based on a standard bridle size, however if your horse or pony needs a more tailored fit, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
This head collar is not designed to open in daily normal use or when horses are being led (figure 1).

Figure 2
The head piece is designed to open when poll pressure is greater than the release point set by the keepers. The position of the keepers increases or decreases the release point. 75% of accidents happen when the horse is tied up so the pulling back and up will increase pressure on the poll (figure 2).
By moving the headpiece keepers downwards, the force required for the head collar to release increases. In laboratory conditions, in position A, the head collar released on average between 50-60kg. For position B, it was between 80-90kg. Ideally, position A should be used as much as possible, however if there is a situation where you need it to release at a higher force, move the keepers downwards to position B.

Romy Fryer –
It’s a really smart, durable headcollar where safety isn’t compensated for fashion as with lots of items on the market currently. The price point is very well justified, given the lifespan of the Stellar Headcollar, and it’s so easy to clean, a damp cloth brings it up looking brand new! I trust it when Sprout is tied up, travelling and mucking around in the field and he wears it very happily so comfort can be vouched for. Really would recommend to everybody, you only get one horse so with safety at the forefront of everything we do, you should only need to buy top-notch quality once!
Emma Collins –
I really like the material, the safety mechanisms & how pretty it is
Zoe Oxley –
Very attractive looking, good quality and trustworthy.
samantha osborne –
Stellar is a really smart and unique piece of every day equipment with the luxury look and feel to be used for best wear too. It is multi functional and so practical. I am really impressed with it. I have been able to recommended it to friends with catching in from the field issues, tying up concerns and for breaking horses in as a useful piece of equipment. Thank you so much!
Teal Anthoney –
I really like the safety aspect and the fact that the headcollar looks like a leather headcollar so looks smart. My horse actually got caught whilst tied up a few weeks ago and I saw the stellar in action. Thank god she had it on!! She now wears it every day!
Jasmine Ketley –
Love it! The design makes me feel that he’s so safe, the quality is great and it’s very smart!
Cerys Withey –
I love the design of the stellar head collars, they’re obviously made with the no1 priority being safety but as well as this they’re so gorgeous and comfortable for the horses. I also love the synthetic leather material as they can get wet and be wiped over easily as well as looking beautiful when on. The padding on the nose and head piece is also very nice!
Tilly Gill –
Easy to clean, super smart, doesn’t look out of place at shows or on the yard.
Millie Heape –
This head collar looks and feels amazing! The material is such good quality.
Jenna Dingle –
The head collar is very good quality and easy to use and clean. It fitted my pony perfectly and looked very smart on him!
Katie Rankine –
I am very impressed all round with the stellar head collar, it has been so handy to have whilst my horse has been having a variety of medical treatments. It has definitely put my mind at rest whilst tying her up, knowing that if she were to get into trouble she would not get injured. Having seen a horse fracture it’s withers after being in an incident where the head collar lead rope and bailing twine did not break I will definitely only be buying the stellar head collar from now on. I have recommended it to everyone at my yard as I have been so impressed with the stellar performance!
Maisy Elliott –
I feel reassured now that my horse won’t get injured if she suddenly spooks or pulls back. Before having the Stellar my horse (Havana) had to be hand held while she was groomed, tacked up etc. because if she felt stressed or scared and then felt the restriction of being tied up, she panicked. Since using the Stellar I began tying her up and after the head collar gave way a few times she seemed to understand that it was ok to be tied up because if she got scared or stressed she could get free and I believe the Stellar has made her feel less restrained and more relaxed. I can’t thank you enough, you’ve made a massive difference to Havana’s life.
Ellie Chisholm –
This head collar makes me feel confident that my horse is safe while wearing one, it’s very easy to use and fit. It also looks so smart and it’s easy to clean!
Charlie Bransden –
For horses left in fields with headcollars on an excellent idea and solution, and for flighty nervous horses too.
April.King –
Definitely recommend! It looks so smart and safe!
Olivia Richardson –
Very nice head collar, super smart and safe!
sapph sloan –
Extremely practical, very high safety levels, I love that the release pressure can be altered situation dependent. The Stellar is extremely easy to clean and absolutely is a head turner in the appearance department!
Martha Charlton –
I much prefer the Stellar Head Collar to a leather head collar one as it is far more hard-wearing and much easier to clean than leather! Very classy and smart looking. My favourite part is how I don’t have to worry about it getting wet/muddy!
Sarah Baldwin –
The head collar is in use every day, my pony lives out at night and in during the day, the headcollar is left out on the gate or on the ground, all night, no signs of wear or effects of weather (sun, dew etc), no fading of the colour or cracks – all in all it is a great product!
NICOLA BOWLEY (verified owner) –
With regards most new products in the market I’ve always been sceptical. Here we go another item that’s claimed to do A B and C .
But I did like the look of it and I’ve not been failed by Equilibrium Products.
The style is smart
Feels soft and comfortable materials
The quick release system was put to test when my 3 yr old pulled back whilst tied up having a bath
The head collar was first to release
Clare Poole (verified owner) –
I absolutely love the head collars and can’t understand why someone hadn’t come up with such a simple idea decades ago! I have always felt the standard buckle on a head collar is illogical on a large animal so easily capable of putting its head above your normal reach.
I have two horses that can occasionally get excited and try to rush off when being turned out and courtesy of one of them have a long term shoulder injury. These head collars have made a world of difference when it comes to turning them out.
The head collars are also easy to clean but don’t absorb water and stay wet. I have been very impressed with them, thank you for coming up with the design!
Julia Cuppini (verified owner) –
The Stellar head collar is working out really well. I like it because it looks as good as the traditional smart leather but is completely good as new as if it were well saddle soaped leather, even after 3-4 months or so, I think it is, of use yet it has been hanging outside the stable in all weathers. It is never wet unlike a material head collar and looks as though it is going to last forever. The key factor though, is that it is so easy to use with the press stud opening on the side piece and I feel very secure with my 14 year old, slightly built daughter being able to lead our large 16hh horse into the field knowing that it would release if she spooked or pulled away for any reason. Yet with a gentler tug, it doesn’t release. It is great to know we won’t be dragged along if we hold on when the horse pulls away hard and that the horse can also pull free too if needed, rather than hurt herself in a sticky situation.
Sara Metcalfe (verified owner) –
I like it so much I am going to buy another one so I have one for both my horses! It does what it says on the tin and already it has stopped my horse hurting himself by releasing when he stood on his lead rein when I had let go of it and he trotted away! The safety side of it is unquestionable and I am happy to use it to lead, travel, tie up. It’s very smart, I have never had to clean it yet and I highly recommend it as I use mine every day.
Molly Cook –
The new Stellar Head collar is just incredible. There is nothing worse than seeing our horses panic whilst being tied up or accidents when head collars have been caught on something. I always travel my horses in leather head collars due to breaking easier in comparison to a nylon one but this Stellar head collar beats them all! The safety release feature has been under rigorous scientific testing and is not leather meaning it is a lot easier to clean and maintain! It’s gorgeous design makes my horses look very smart, and it’s practicality is unbeatable.
I think this head collar should be a staple for all those with equines, and I truly believe in there phrase that safety should not be a choice! I will be using this head collar for EVERYTHING.
James Sommerville –
This really has been a godsend for Casper. He gets very nervous tied up and the amount of head collar and lead ropes we have been through is painful! Not to mention the safety of our precious Casper. This head collar has helped him feel more secure and he hasn’t panicked when he has pulled back with the Stellar headcollar doing its job! Thank you so much Equilibrium for creating this amazing product! Happy pony, happy life!
Judy Harvey –
Bento had a potentially nasty accident a few weeks ago which would never have happened if he had been wearing one of these. Thank you so much for another great innovation. I now don’t need to worry about the horses pulling back.
